What's new for OMII-UK in 2010?

Happy New Year!

It looks like 2010 is going to be a busy year for OMII-UK.

New Collaborations

We kick off the year with news of the Collaborations Workshop, an event which will bring together the knowledge, contacts and information needed to generate successful e-Research partnerships. The workshop will be held on 10-11 March 2010 and registration is now open.

New Software

Our Commissioned Software Programme continues to produce the e-Research software that is needed by the research community. There will be at least four new additions to our catalogue with more being announced during 2010:

  • DataMinx enables the transfer of large quantities of data in a scalable manner between different types of storage resources (GridFTP, SRB, iRODS, SRM, SFTP, FTP, WebDAV, HTTP(S), local file) and will be available for NGS users.
  • DiGS/SRM will allow the UK Quantum Chromodynamics community to use community storage facilities, and transfer this functionality to other DiGS user communities.
  • Enhancing CIAS will develop an existing assessment model for global climate policy to meet the needs of current users, and will add interfaces to allow access to a new set of users.
  • OSCAR-ChEBI will develop the OSCAR chemical-text-mining software to meet the needs of the European Bioinformatics Institute.

New Partners

Apart from our new commissioned software partners, 2010 will also see our new PALs (Product/Area Liaisons) joining our established PALs team. The new PALs, Jeremy Cohen and Shantenu Jha, will help to establish OMII-UK software within their user communities.

New Expertise

We will continue to bring together software developers with researchers that want to take advantage of the latest e-Research techniques, and we will continue to participate with the leading e-Research, grid, HPC and standards organisations. We will also be taking part as one of the expert groups in JISC's technical review of cloud computing for research.
