Job Brokering using the CROWNGrid Scheduler

Software used:
CROWNGrid: Job scheduler

Both OMII-UK and OMII-China provide software releases that enable scientists to expedite the compute-intensive aspects of their scientific process. However, the variety of services they provide operate on technically different grid platforms. Ideally, being able to interoperate the provided services would enable solutions to be developed that make optimal use of the functionality provided by both platforms.

As part of OMII-UK's work evaluating and integrating technology for OMII-Europe we have managed to establish interoperability between the CROWN and OMII-UK software environments for job brokering and execution.

The CROWN Scheduler has been deployed within the OMII-UK software environment and uses the Grimoires registry and GridSAM job services along with the CROWN job service. In this interaction the CROWN Scheduler accepts JSDL (Job Submission and Description Language) job requests, which then request any usable job services from a Grimoires registry. It is then able to select an execution service based on its scheduling policy, and submit the job to instances of either GridSAM or the CROWN job services for execution.

This integration was possible thanks to the fact that both the OMII-UK and CROWN platforms use the same set of core interoperable standards such as JSDL. Figure 1 presents a snapshot of the main control panel of the OMII-UK/CROWN interoperability demo.
