Computational Resource Selection and Execution through Taverna using GridSAM & Grimoires

Software used:
Taverna : Workflow environment of myGrid.
GridSAM : Open source job submission and monitoring web service.
GRIMOIRES : Registry which hosts descriptions of services and workflows.

One of the major problems faced by scientists when using Grid software is the complexity of the interface used to drive the functionality. In addition, managing the orchestration of the various services to achieve a scientific goal can be an involved and complex task.

The Taverna project aims to address this by providing a language and software tools to facilitate easy use of workflow and distributed compute technology within the eScience community.

The Taverna graphical job execution tool and OMII-UK Development Kit now successfully interoperate. In this configuration Taverna coordinates the workflow between GridSAM, Grimoires and PlotWS web services. We use the organisational and technology-interface mechanisms provided by Taverna to achieve a set of scientific and operational objectives. The key operations representing the interaction between Taverna and OMII-UK software are:

  • Service discovery: utilising the Grimoires registry service,
  • Data analysis: job submission and monitoring, using the GridSAM service,
  • Data visualisation: using the PlotWS service.
