Workshop Session 1 - OMII-UK

Time: 17:00 - 20:00
Chair: June Finch
Venue: Conference Room 1

Summary

OMII-UK is an open source organisation that empowers the UK research community by providing software for use by researchers in disciplines as diverse as Bioinformatics, Astrophysics and Archaeology. All of our software is free and fully supported.

OMII-UK was formed in January 2006 as a partnership between the existing OMII activity at the University of Southampton, and software activities at the University of Manchester within the myGrid project and the OGSA-DAI project at the National e-Science Centre and EPCC. Our groups have been producing e-Research software individually since 2001.

Many researchers would benefit from access to emerging e-Infrastructure - such as the Grid - but are put off by software that is difficult to implement and use. OMII-UK’s Software Solutions solve these problems by providing the functionality needed by researchers in an easy-to-use and easy-to-install package.

Our first three Software Solutions address the primary needs of researchers: accessing computing power, enabling the sharing of data in collaborations and automating scientific experiments with workflows. In addition to our Software Solutions, we also provide the OMII-UK Development Kit, which can be used to create your own bespoke software.

In this workshop, we present a selection of recently funded Commissioned Software programme projects, together with an opportunity for all attendees to see how OMII-UK can benefit them. We also launch the OMII-UK Open Forum and invite the attendees to take the opportunity to help shape OMII-UK's activities.
