DIASER

Summary

DIASER (Distributed Internet Archive System for Educational Repositories) is designed to manage long-term, mixed data archives that are generated by existing backup software. Robust geographical distribution ensures the availability of the backup using commodity hardware and existing resources. DIASER allows an organisation to retain administrative and financial control of their backups without investing in high-cost software.

Download

The latest version of DIASER can be downloaded from from SourceForge.

System Requirements

A Workstation:

  • Perl core v5.8.8 or above, (Perl v5.10.0 is recommended for best performance).

Three nodes:

  • Perl core v5.8.8 or above. Linux with services; sshd, crontab, iptables ssh port open, ntpd, rsync (non daemon).
  • Additional Perl modules.

More information about system requirements is available in the QuickStart documentation.

Further Information

Developers

DIASER was initially developed as DIAP by a small company, Interlinux Ltd., owned by Damian Brasher and partners. JISC funding and collaboration with OMII-UK and the University of Southampton has furthered technical development and the product is now known as DIASER.

Primary developer and technical lead: Damian Brasher - OMII-UK, Interlinux Ltd

Project advisor: Neil P Chue Hong - OMII-UK

Documentation and Publicity: Simon Hettrick - OMII-UK

Learn how to configure Diaser with the Diaser configuration video(info).

DIASER is open-source software that is used to store archives across three geographical locations. Creation of the archives is carefully structured and managed, and uses existing resources. It is suitable for all organisations, especially HE institutions and SMEs.

DIASER works by reserving secure space on three nodes (or servers). DIASER then helps the user feed archive volumes, generated by existing backup software, into its robust storage. The carefully designed structure stores archive data so that it is easy to find and retrieve data from the archives when it is needed.

To ensure that the data transfer does not use a disproportionate amount of bandwidth, DIASER transfer data over two periods. During the first time period, data is transferred from the original backup facility to the first node, and during the second period data is transferred from the first node to the second node. DIASER also allows multiple installations to further transfer phases, and even allows disk space to be shared with separate installations.

DIASER is designed to be user friendly and future proof. For more information see the comprehensive documentation.
