The Development Kit
Summary
The OMII-UK Development Kit comprises a collection of interoperable Software Components supported by a secure infrastructure. Each Software Component is an independent software package that performs a particular task. The Software Component, or the combination of Software Components, that you choose to install depends on what you want the software to do. In this way, the Development Kit is completely flexible, you can tailor it to meet your specific needs.
The current version of the Development Kit allows the installation of: AHE, BPEL, GridSAM, Grimoires, OGSA-DAI, OGM and WSRF::Lite.

Developers
The Development Kit is integrated, tested and packaged by OMII-UK. The Software Components are developed by different groups, as described in the 'More information' links available on the Software Overview page.
What can it do?
The function of the Development Kit is dictated by the Software Components that you choose to download and install. In other words, the functionality of the Development Kit is the same that of the Software Components that are chosen to be installed. The functionality of the Software Components is described on the software overview page.
How does it work?
The Development Kit comprises Server and Client software.
The Development Kit Server is made up of a Web Services container in which one or more Software Components can be installed. The WS Container is built from a number of off-the-shelf WS technologies that have been pre-configured and tested to optimise their interoperation. The three WS technologies are:
- Apache Tomcat, which provides an environment in which Java code can run in cooperation with a web server. It is a Web Services container that implements the Java Servlet and the JavaServer Pages specifications from Sun Microsystems.
- Apache Axis, which consists of utilities and APIs for generating and deploying Web Service applications. It is a SOAP implementation offering an XML-based Web service framework.
- Apache WSS4J, which is a Java library that is used to sign and verify SOAP Messages with WS-Security information. It is an implementation of the OASIS Web Services Security standard.
The Development Kit Client is used to interact with the Development Kit Server.
