Background
OGSA-DAI is an open-source middleware solution that allows resources, such as relational or XML databases to be accessed via the grid. Fully-customisable, the product can be tailored to meet the exact requirements of specific communities, projects and businesses.
The Simple API for Grid Applications (SAGA) is a client-side library which provides access to the most commonly used high-level Grid functionalities, like file and job handling, replica management, messaging, etc.
Preliminary work has already been done investigating how SAGA can be integrated with OGSA-DAI to provide access to grid-style computation and data access capabilities. But this ambitious work is currently only proof of concept. It requires a capable and enthusiastic individual to progress this integration work and provide a real implementation.
Student aim
Create new OGSA-DAI 'Activities' to fully harness SAGA's compute job and data handling capabilities.
Project aim
Extend OGSA-DAI's functionality to include:
- Parallelisation through Grid job submission and monitoring
- Access to a greater set of Grid data resources
Skillset
- A beginner's understanding of SAGA
- Proficiency in Java
- Prior knowledge of web services would be useful but not essential
