Funding from EPSRC will see continued development on OGSA-DAI until April 2010. A key part of this work will be to evolve OGSA-DAI from being an open-source product into an open-source project. Apart from being in line with OMII-UK's goal to promote software sustainability, this change should guarantee that the lifetime of the OGSA-DAI product exists outwith any single institution or funding stream.

Over OGSA-DAI’s lifetime, it has formed an international community of users and developers from a myriad of areas. The open-source project will provide this community with a focal point for developing, using and supporting OGSA-DAI (and its related components). It will also provide means for the community to develop and release their own components alongside OGSA-DAI, and an avenue for ensuring the sustainability of their components.

Over the next few months, we will set in place the governance and infrastructure of the OGSA-DAI open-source project. This will be done in conjunction with key community members, and will draw upon the expertise of our OMII-UK partners in Manchester and Southampton, and of the Globus Alliance. We aim to roll out our open-source project site in October 2009.

This new phase of the project is accompanied by some staffing changes. Rob Baxter, head of EPCC's software source group, and manager of the ADMIRE data-mining project, takes over as OGSA-DAI project manager. Mario Antonioletti moves to a new role as OGSA-DAI's outreach coordinator and open-source community liaison, and Mike Jackson will be taking on the role of technical lead.
