Re-implement OGSA-WebDB as a contribution to the OGSA-DAI project

Google Summer of Code 2010 ideas

Primary Mentor: Steven Lynden
Secondary Mentor: Mario Antonioletti
Project: OGSA-WebDB, OGSA-DAI.

Background

OGSA-WebDB, implemented by AIST's DBGrid team (http://dbgrid.org), allows Web-databases to be accessed using OGSA-DAI. OGSA-WebDB extends OGSA-DAI with data resources and activities that enable OGSA-DAI-wrapped relational databases and form-based Web-accessible databases such as SwissProt, PubMed etc. to be queried and integrated using SQL, using an adaptive optimisation approach to order joins and reduce query response times. The latest version of OGSA-WebDB is based on OGSA-DAI 3.0 and was released by AIST. This release is not up-to-date with the latest version of OGSA-DAI.

Project Goals

The goals of this project are:

1 - Update or re-implement the OGSA-WebDB code to be compatible with the latest version of OGSA-DAI. 2 - Package OGSA-WebDB as a contribution to the OGSA-DAI project.

Project Description

The goal of this project is to update or re-implement OGSA-WebDB to be compatible with the latest version of OGSA-DAI and package it as a contribution to the OGSA-DAI project. OGSA-WebDB is implemented in Java but is based on a previous version of OGSA-DAI (3.0). The project will involve taking the OGSA-WebDB code and updating (or in some parts re-implementing completely) it so that it can be used with the latest version of OGSA-DAI. It will be necessary to produce code that satisfies the requirements necessary in order for it to be submitted as a contribution to the OGSA-DAI project. There is scope for improvement of the query optimisation strategies and other aspects of the system, time permitting.

Project Requirements

Proficiency in the Java programming language Knowledge of or interest in databases and query processing
